Let’s talk about striking techniques, if you are have already trained in a martial art then use whatever you are comfortable with, but in a self defense situation you are going to have to hit somebody to get out of there 99% of the time. There is an obvious strike to the groin, everybody talks about kicking somebody where it hurts, but in reality the groin is a small target and it's easily protected in a self defense situation, there are other obvious ones, which is headbutts, and if your head is dragged into somebody in an attack situation, then bite if you have to, to get out of there, you know, just do what you have got to, to get away.
Preemptive striking, the legal situation is if the antagonist is aggressive and moving towards you and you are in fear for your safety you can legally strike the first blow in self defense just do what you have got to do to, to get out of there, but you know the law states that if the antagonist is aggressive and moving towards you and you fear for your safety you can legally strike the first blow.
Now the average street attacker, if there is such an animal, will always be looking for a victim; expecting them to be of a defensive disposition and therefore expecting them to move in a backwards motion. If you take this through lateral thinking and turn it on his head, this will tell you that moving forward will give you an advantage of the assailant. While moving forwards against any attacker, you will put them in to unknown territory, you will be less likely to fall or be taken to the floor and you will have better momentum and therefore be able to make better use of your bodyweight, added to that the fact that moving forwards will at least make you seem more confident and aggressive; the attacker will be put on a defensive.
So let's talk about looking at the elbow strike and this a close range strike, stroking with the forearm or the elbow itself. Now you are going to clench your fist here, bring the fist in to the shoulder and this power comes, not just from the arm, but from the whole body. The body motion is the key to this driving through, twisting the whole body and driving through all the way down to your toes; fist closing here driving all away through. I said this is a closed ranged strike, okay, a typical example will be from a grab here, the fist comes in and I drive through striking with the elbow, and there is an obvious release there, okay.
From here, driving through, the whole body motion, twisting all the way through my body and driving through, okay. We look at it against the strike shield, you can see the power, close range, chest nice and close here, all I am doing is fist clench close it, drive through okay. From here, nice and close, twist the whole body and drive through that elbow. And if we look at it as a street application, maybe somebody coming in, you can say, back off man, I do not want any trouble, if they come back, I can preemptively strike, driving through with that elbow. Again, back off, I don't want any trouble, if I come back in, drive through again preemptively striking with that elbow strike.
