Great video. Very entertaining. Lots of enthusiasm, sometimes too much, but very watchable, funny and informative. The video is visually very poor however.

Sus9 add9 C9 chords

All right so now, I am beginning recording right now guys. Flash Gordon asked me, he said, “Walt, what is the difference between a C add nine and a C9 and a C sus2?” Here is the thing, a C9, a C9 add and a C sus2, here is how they work. Before we get this, we need to understand what is a ninth chord, so once again guys if I want to block out my C major scale C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. The way that I get to my ninth is I go pass the eight, the eight obviously is my root, so eight is the same as one right here C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. G is a fifth, B is a seventh, C is the eight, now what if I want to go past that? So now, what if I want to go past that right here D, E, F, nine, ten, eleven this tensions guys that we learned from yesterday’s episode. So, if I go here on my tension, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven the way that I get to my ninth is check it out, there it is right there. Now you are probably saying D, is that the same as two? Absolutely, absolutely and tensions nine is the same as two, eleven is the same as four, 13 is the same as six. These are all tension guys, absolutely and say a C9 chord, what are the notes that are in my C9 chords, anybody know? Does anyone in class know what the notes in my C9 chord are? Here we have C, E, G never we start with our C major scale or C major chord, root three five and by the way. If you do not know what your major chord is, all the archives are at my website waltribeiro.net. Just look for major triads, minor triads to see you know that the three notes that are in my major chord are my root third and fifth. The root three and five, that is what makes up a chord but I want to go further there, instead of root three and five, I want to go seven and nine. If I get root C, E, G, B it is a seventh chord and I go C, E, G, B, D that is how I make it my ninth chord. So you are probably saying to yourself, “Walt, you skipped ahead men, you never even explained to me how to make a seventh chord.” Well it is the same as I make a ninth chord. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven and I am going root three five C, E, G. By the way if it is a different key then everything changes, if it is C, E, G, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C I would go if I were in the key of F, I am going F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G and I am continuing but now C, E, G root three and five, seven, nine. C, E, G, B, D one, three, five, seven, nine, nine is same as two which all makes sense now, so check it out. You are probably saying to yourself, “Walt, how do I get to my C9, C, E, G, B, D,” how I do this, C add9 is C, E, G but check this out, my C add9 is going to be my C chord but I add my ninth, you skip the seventh. What is my C sus2? What is the difference from my C sus2 to my C add9? My C sus2 instead of being C, E, G, D what the sus does suspended it, what my sus chord does right here is that it literally replaces the third interval. So the old way of where I had C, E, G, D not on the sus2 chord we now have C, D, G so my C9 consists of five notes C, E, G, B, D my C add9 is my C chord and I add ninth and my C sus2 is C, D, G so you are probably say, “Walt, why is that called a C sus2 and not a C sus9?” And the answer is because it just is, but the two is the D, two is the same as nine but at the C add9 and I get this question a lot is that is the ninth an octave away from the two? Not necessarily, I mean when you a see a C add9 you will assume that the seventh interval is in there but it says otherwise. For example C add9, it is saying give me a C chord root three five, my C chord and then just add the nine. Here is a C add9, here is a C9 and here is a C sus2. C sus2 is here, C add9 is going to be here and then if I wanted to add my C9, by the way this seventh right here is going to be a B flat, it is a B flat.
