we did this with the door to our bedroom and now the hinge squeaks all the time

I like to do that but on the middle hinge. If you use the top hinge it can move the whole door, and cause it not to close at all.

Swinging Door Solution

Hi! I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop. Do you have that door in your house that you’d love to leave ajar—say, to a baby’s room so you can peak in every once in a while? Or say, to your bed room when you want to let that cool breeze come through? But every time you open it up, as soon as you let it go, it slowly closes or opens on its own? There’s a simple solution for that. Let’s get to work. To take care of this problem, you need to take out the top hinge pin. Simply take a nail and a hammer. With the door in a closed position, go ahead and tap that hinge pin out. Simply take the pin, set it on a block of wood, and with your hammer, bend it slightly. By bending that hinge pin, that should cause just enough friction in that hinge that when you let go of the door, it stays where you want it. So there you go.
