Symptoms of a Midlife Crisis

Catherine: I’m Catherine. I’m from California. My friend’s father recently started buying expensive cars, spending time with younger women and he acts like he is 20, is he in a mid-life crisis?

Timothy Fong: Well Catherine, what you are describing are the classic signs of “a mid-life crisis” but we don’t actually have a psychiatric diagnoses or a term for that. Generally though, what does happen, sometimes it could be a sign of other psychiatric things going on like depression, substance abuse, anxiety, disorders. So it I think, it would be important to continue to communicate to your friend’s father about hey this are behavioral changes that we are not so sure we understand and that it’s important that if a lot of people not just one or two people but there are a lot of people are worried about that behavior that they seek professional help for your friend’s father.
