Taking Asthma Medication in Athletic competitions

Male: If a kid was participating in a sport and had to take any medication, are there any medication that’s more legal because sometimes you take a medicine, they think you’re cheating by getting some—advantage. Are there any medicines more illegal in the sense that they could have it and they do a blood test?

Michael Marcus: Most of the approved asthma medications are legal for all athletes’ right up through Olympic level and NCAA level athletes. Some of those medications need to be submitted prior to the getting approval. Once submitted, the approval process is automatic and the list of medications can change depending on new experience.

So, what I recommend is to check the website of the NCAA or the U.S. Olympic Committee to get the updated list of medications so that you can see if the medication needs an authorization or approval process in order for the patient to use it but there is not any medication used for asthma which would be illegal in sports. It’s just that some do need pre-approval to get clearance.
