Teaching your dog to sit is a practical exercise that is easy to teach. The clicking sound made by the click-click communicates an instant Yes, to your dog's exact moment, he did something you liked. Before teaching Sit, I am using the click to mark the correct behavior, condition your dog to the sound of a click-click, by repeating the sequence of click, treat, click, treat, see the video on clicker conditioning for details.
Recommended equipment is the click-click, six foot leash, bite size treats and a treat munch. The training area should be in a quiet location, that is free from distraction, keep the duration of your training sessions less than 15 minutes, put your dog on the left side, hold the leash in your right hand, two feet from the snack, hold the bite size treats in your right hand between your thumb and forefinger, hold the click-click in your left hand, hold the treat slightly in front of your dog's nose and raise it in a slight upward arc to lower your dog into the sit position, click and reward your dog the moment he sits, repeat at least fifteen times, practice the sit without the Sit command for two training sessions, if needed you can initially guide your dog into the sit position with your hand.
On the third training session, begin using the Sit command, the moment your dog sits, adding the command after your dog has an idea of what to do, makes it easier for him to learn the Sit command.
