The next important command to get sorted out is getting your dog to come back to you. So here, we'll come back, call the dog's name whatever you want to use and it's really important to get this one sorted because otherwise if you have your dog out in the field or out in the public places, you're never going to get him come back to you. And there are a couple of really important things to remember when you're teaching this command and the first is that never, don't call his name when he is off doing something else. So if he is off, chasing a stick or chasing a rabbit his nose into a bush and you all day yelling like, come back, come back, come back. He is just going to ignore you and then he will associate the command with ignoring you, with disobeying the command.
So the key is just to give his command when he is actually coming back towards you. So if for example he is a good dog retrieving, you throw a stick or throw a ball, and he comes back. When he got it and he is coming back to you anyway, that's when you should give him his command. So start calling him once he is on his way back. So Jack, come here, come here, good boy, come here, good boy. So he is doing it anyway. He is associating that command really. I am going to get it and say, there you go. He gets his treat.
So that's really how you go about doing it, give him to associate when he is coming about you anyway. So he may have been off moving around the bushes for half an hour and he finally comes back to you. That's the time to shout the command, shout his name, and associate that with coming back to you.
And the other big mistake that people make is actually when the dog is disappeared you starting this training process, the dog has disappeared off. He has ignored you for an hour now, he has been off in field. You're getting really, really annoyed because the dog is disappeared. Then the dog finally decides to come back to you and the natural reaction is to get really angry with telling the dog a bad dog. The trouble is that the dog associates just the last action he has done which is come back to you with being told off. So in the dog's mind, you're telling him off to coming back to you which is exactly what you don't want to do.
So in those situations you're just going to grit your teeth and you got to appraise the dog even though you feel like murdering the dog because he has kept you waiting for hours. You're going to grit your teeth, and you're going to say well done, good boy because that's what he is going to remember is coming back to you and being appraised again.
