Tech Review - JamMate UFO USB Phantom Microphone
Hello again. My name is Rodney Reynolds and welcome to another video review. Today I'm looking at the JamMate UFO USB Phantom microphone. What's included is a carry case, a quick start guide, drivers and software, a carry pouch, USB 2 cable, microphones stand mount and the JamMate UFO and there's also an optional shock mount which I'll be taking a look at a little later.
This is a very unique product because the JamMate UFO is an only one solution that includes an audio interface and phantom powered microphone. It essentially eliminates the need for a pro microphone and preamp. Now let's have a closer look at the product. At the top is the microphone and at the bottom are the connections, USB 2 and the headset.
The outside casing does come up by unscrewing a ring at the bottom. Inside are the microphone preamp components on a printed circuit board. There's also a gain control for increasing the microphone sensitivity. The microphone stand mount just screws in at the bottom. The shock mount also simply screws in at the bottom. The shock mount prevents the microphone from being shock and this is extremely handy because while recoding if the microphone stand does get hit it won't be heard. It’s able to accomplish this since it suspends the microphone. All these cord like things you see are actually strong and elastic. And here's what it looks like mounted on a microphone stand.
If you ever try to use a professional microphone on a computer system you know how frustrating it is that’s because most regular and some cards are not equipped for professional mics. Why it doesn’t work that well has to do with in fitting matching. Pro mics don’t mix well with the computer 3.5 millimeter audio mic jack. Usually the audio is so low they are useless unless you hold them right up to your mouth and scream but even then there is clipping and that’s a major issue. You need to have a preamp to make it work properly.
To give you some ideas what a professional microphones sounds like connected into a computer system without a preamp have a listen. I have the level at max and the microphone at plus 20 DB boost. I put the microphone closer to my mouth, it’s a little louder but as you can hear it’s very poor. Now have a listen to the JamMate UFO. The difference is amazing.
The software that is included allows you to adjust the latency, mic input, wave output, ASIO redirection and there's also a master control. If you're looking for a very high quality microphone for your computer system well this is definitely it. I was blown away with the quality of this particular microphone. Actually I prefer this over using a pro mic and a preamp together because this is very simple. You just connect it into the USB port install the drivers and that’s it. Overall this is a 100% kick ass product. Until the next time, take care.
