Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB Hard Drive
Hello again. I’m Rodney Reynolds and welcome to another video review. Today, I’m looking at the Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB Hard Drive.
The Western Digital VelociRaptor line ATA the hard drives are currently available in 150GB and 300GB capacities and there are 3 different models. The 2.5-inch hard drive is designed to fit in blades servers and other enterprise storage configurations but isn’t not designed for use in laptop or notebook computers and there are two 3.5-inch models both come with an ice pack melting frame but 1 is back playing ready and the other isn’t.
I’m reviewing the 300GB, 3.5 inch back playing ready model. Before I continue let’s go over what to consider when selecting a 3.5-inch hard drive. The first decision is whether to go with a single hard drive or multiple hard drives in a rate configuration. Rate stands for the redone of the ray of inexpensive disk or redone at the right of independent disks. A single hard drive is an expensive but will this slower than 2 hard drives in a rate 0 configuration.
The disadvantage though of a rate 0 set up is, that if 1 drive is corrupted or fails all the data can be lost. A rate 5 or rate 10 set up is much more secure but lacks the performance of rate 0.There are 5 main features to consider when selecting a 3.50-insch hard drive, interface, rotation speed, buffer size, access seek time and capacity. There are 2 main interface types IDE and Serial ATA. Select the hard drive with serial ATA to interface since it’s the newest technology. The rotation speed should be72 RPM’s or greater preferably 10,000. The buffer size should be 8MB or greater probably 16 MB or larger and the access seek time should be less than 10 milliseconds also get a hard drive that best suits your storage needs.
This hard drive interface is serial ATA 3GB per second. It has a capacity of 300GB, average latency is 3 milliseconds, the rotation speed of 10,000 RPM’s, a 16MB buffer size, power consumption is 6.08watts while being access and 4.53 watts when idle. The noise level is 29 to 36 decibels and it comes with a 5 year warranty.
Now let me briefly outline the key technologies of this product the 2.5-inch Western Digital VelociRaptor is enclose in a back playing ready 3.5-inch enterprise class mounting frame with a built in heat sink that keeps this powerful little drive extra cool when installed in a high performance desktop chasse. No touched ramp low technology ensures that the recording head never touches the disc media ensuring significantly last where to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.
Rotation acceleration feed 4 optimize this operation and performance when the drives are used in a vibration prone multi drive chassis built on the performance lines of the Western Digital Raptor this 10,000 RPM drives with serial ATA 3GB per second interface and a 16MB buffer size deliver mind than the performance state of the art technology packs twice the capacity per disc compare to its older brother western digital raptor resulting in a up to 300GB of high performance storage space in this enterprise class 2.5-inch hard drive.
This hard drive is also designed and manufactured to enterprise class standards to provide enterprise reliability in high duty cycle environment with 1.4 million hours mean time between failures this drives have the highest available reliability reading on a high capacity serial ATA drive.
Now let’s have a closer look at this hard drive. The massive heat sink is where the first thing that you’ll notice when you look at this hard drive and a very small 2.5-inch drive. Basically it’s a 2.5-inch hard drive with a heat sink raptor around it, so you can feel it in a 3.5-inch drive bay. Here’s the serial ATA connection, serial ATA data connection and the jumpers. There are a total of 6 screw holes on the sides, 3 on the side and 3 on the other side. And there are 4 screw holes on the bottom. On the top of the hard drive is the model number, serial number, manufacturing date and more information.
If you’re looking for the fastest serial ATA hard drive that’s currently available this is it. Overall this is a 100% kickass product until next time, take care.
