Tech Topics - What's The Best Affordable GPS
Hello again, I’m Rodney Reynolds from 3Dgameman.com. This next question is what’s the best bank for the box GPS currently on the market. Well, before I go into that, I want to talk a little about GPS. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, and it consists of satellites in space monitoring stations on earth and your own GPS. And there are between 24 to 32 medium earth orbiting satellite, and they’re up around 12,000 miles or 20,000 kilometers. But you only need four of these to lock on to your position on earth when you’re using a GPS unit. Now for my experience, that’s really never an issue. Normally I lock on to between 6 and 10 satellites, of course that depends on where you are. If you’re inside of a building or underground, you might not be able to pick up a signal at all, and that’s very normal. So, what should you look for when selecting a GPS? Well I think you should get one that has an antiglare screen, that screen size should be 3 and a half inches and up. And you should probably get one that has an SD memory slot, although that’s not really a big deal anymore. Because a lot of the new units have at least one gigabyte of memory, which is more than adequate for most very large maps. Now the one that I really, really like is the Tom Tom One Third edition. This thing is amazing. It’s so simple to use. You can update it off internet. It’s very, very affordable. I recently purchased this one for $150.00. That is bargain basement price for a portable unit like this, where you can take pretty much anywhere. And from my experience, it will run between one and a half to two and a half hours on the battery on a single charge. Which is pretty good, most of my trips are between that time. So, I don’t normally connect it into the cigarette lighter, I just mount it with the mount that they included on the window, and it’s portable. Just take it out and you can take it with you wherever you go. Also, if you’re on long walks or a hiking, this can also come in handy. Just to have in your pocket to see where you are. Hope this answers your question, and keep your questions coming.
