Here we have a rig. Now a rig is simply the float, the line, the hook and the weights. The terminal tackle that we use to catch the fish.
You can buy a ready-made rigs in any good tackle shop and I would certainly not recommend to any beginner and do learn how to tie your own.
That you need to look at for the right type of rig and you need to look for rigs that are made from a pre-panned line an 18 or 20 size hooks especially when maggot fishing.
Let us take a look attaching the rig top the end of the pole. The first one that I am going to attach is to the standard pole which is just a simple eye in the ends. Now, what we need to do is to take the end of the loop and pass that through the metal eye.
Once we pass it through, simply pass the whole rig back through and slide it through the pole winder. That would end tension up and give a really good secure fixing. Then, it is just a matter of unwinding the winder along with the pole and there we have a rig attached.
Now, it is really worth pointing out at this stage that the length of the rig needs to be around six to ten inches shorter than the actual length of the pole. This is so you can swing your tackle or fish straight to your hand. If it is longer, you have difficulties in landing fish especially bigger fish. Let us take a look at the attachment on the other part.
Now, this rig is much easier to attach because this is elastic, we have a plastic connector in the end. And, to connect this rig, we just slide the locking ring backwards, pass the loop onto the hook, in the end of the connector and secure it by sliding the stop back over the hook and that is it.
Again, all we need to do is unwind the winder, until we get to the end of the hook. You know it is the rig that is about 10 inches shorter than the length of the pole.
Now, so shot one of this floats correctly, we need the shutter so as the float is only exposing the red part of the tip, probably the half of the red tip would be ideal. This makes the float sensitive and when you get a bite, the fish will be out of that float tip very easily and you will be able to catch more fish.
Now, shutting patterns are also very important. You will notice on these rigs for the shot a very, very small. We are using an 18 hook on this rig with a short hook length which is about two firm breaking strains. The main line is free frame breaking strain but the shots we have a two number 10s as indicators and then four number 8s both about three quarters of the depth.
And this shot, in a actually make the rig fish the bottom much better as an alternative. You can spread this shot equally all the way down the whole line and that will turn this rig into on-the-drop system and on-the-drop means that we can present our bait flowing naturally and slowly from the top of the surface right away to the bottom is a great way of catching smack fish especially if they are feeding in mid water.
It is worth paying lot of attention to your shutting patters and to use in small hooks because it would definitely mean more fish in the net.
