Tequila Colada Cocktail Recipe
Welcome to Common Man Cocktails, I’m your host Derrick Schommer, this week we’re going to do the Tequila Colada. It’s kind of like a Pina Colada with less pina and more tequila. One good reason we have a new sponsor this week. It is Partida Tequila and these are a couple of their bottles that we’ve got. This is their Blanco Plata Silver. Basically, it’s not rested if your new to Tequila, these are the two types of Tequila’s you want Reposado and Blanco or Silver and not gold, not Oro, this is a little rested. It’s like I think I don’t know what the technical term is but, its like maybe a year and you would have to look it up, I will put it in the bottom and this is not rested that’s why it’s clear.
This has a little oakiness to it not too much and then Añejo, which we don’t have here. I consider more of a sipping tequila so we’re not going to use that for mixing drinks. Blanco is good for mixing drinks. I like Reposado because it’s more—you get more of the flavors and the essence of the Tequila, the agaves, and the beautifulness of it.
So today, we’re going to use the Partida Tequila and we’re also going to use just a little Kahlua. This is the special—I think its a little 70 proof instead of whatever the other one is that’s a little less. We’re going to use a little pineapple juice and this is one of my favorite products. This is cream of coconut or Crème de Cacao. I guess there is all different ways to saying it. Coconut cream but we’re not done with the cream we’re going to do a little heavy cream remember this we used this once before, this will be number two.
After going through some recipe’s I’ve found this lot of recipe’s that use heavy cream and we’re going to use our highball glass, this is from awesomedrinks.com, you can get shot glasses, you get the frosted Collins glasses, Rocks glass, a little small, we want to go a little more crazy this episode. So let’s get started, we’ll get out our mixer, ice and that should do. We’re going to do one and a half ounces of tequila. So if you’re into—I like it when measuring stuff and here we go.
If you’re into a tequila like I said try the reposado but the silvers will work good. Here we go kind of clear a little golden hue to darken it up a little bit with just a slight amount. One quarter Kahlua, just give it a little coffee perfume if you will, essence of coffee, give it a little extra complexity and this drink is going to be, I would call this drink barely complex in a lot of different ways from textures to taste, it’s an intense experience that’s worth trying. It might not be your favorite but sometimes you got to try something new just to see how crazy things can get.
So we’ll do the pineapple juice here we go and you want a quarter ounce of the cream, I’m just going to put what I think is a quarter ounce because its really hard to get out one of this things. Squirt a little in there, if you like coconut use, a little more and if you don’t like coconut use a little less and three quarters of an ounce that’s to hefty dose of cream and this is going to add obvious textures some dairy qualities but it’s definitely going to thicken up the drink to something much more substantial than some standard cocktails, you might be used to.
It doesn’t come off very easy either. We’re going to shake that up first let’s ice up our highball that should do and here we go, get going.
God, I felt the seal break. I think so almost made a mess. There we go. It looks like a milkshake consistency. Now the heavy cream is obviously heavy but you’ve shaken it up you really agitating it so you’re getting it to form a little kind of give it the milkshake quality. Nothing but white, smells are intense but the very hard to identify we’ve been tying to figure this out for awhile what you think you got pineapples but there’s different aromas that all the ingredients together kind of make.
It’s tropical but yet dairy. Definitely you are going to have a thick milkshake texture and consistency. You’re going to get the tequila’s especially if you using Reposado Tequila. This is a kind of a high rating Reposado too so the Partido is a very good Tequila and I don’t know what people have told you or what you’ve heard but the better the ingredients you use, the better your cocktails are going to be. Of course, if you go and buy like $200 pile of Tequila that might seem a little unreasonable but this has some good quality ingredients. I don’t taste too much of the Kahlua, but overall an odd experience but one that should definitely try out. It’s not sweet, not sour, kind of just right in the middle some place, it’s just crazy.
This is your Tequila Colada. It doesn’t have that great of a presentation really sorry and don’t forget to check out our sponsors. Awesomedrinks.com, get all kinds of cool drinking ingredients. These nice shot glasses with the heavy bottoms on them so can really do some smashing and Partida, check them out if you could find in the store and this is the Reposado, you could tell by the shape they all kind of look the same.
So, I’m your host Derrick Schommer, we’re teaching you how to drink.
