Tequila Old Fashioned
Ah, the old fashion cocktail, great cocktail. It’s a bit different though doesn’t it?
Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess
Welcome to the Cocktail Spirit from Small Screen Network. I’m your host, Robert Hess.
Now the original definition of the cocktail as we’ve discussed in the past was spirits of any kind, sugar, water, beers and then it was in the mid to late 1800’s when other cocktail formation start coming about. They would refer to this original cocktail as being the old fashioned way of making a cocktail and there brings us the standard old fashioned cocktail we have today made of whiskey.
But remember, the cocktail was spirits of any kind, so we can make an old fashion with any spirit. Today I want to take and make you one with Tequila. Tequila Old Fashioned starts out simply. Now for the sugar, rather than plain sugar, I’m going to be using Agave syrup. Agave’s what they make Tequila with and so I normally would be using simple syrup of plain sugar. So here we’re just going to add about a teaspoon of Agave syrup. You can find this in most of the fine grocery stores or health food stores because supposedly Agave serves better for diabetic or something like that, just like you know honey in that stand point.
We then add a couple dashes or angostura Bitters. Now what I like to do is add the ice at this point. This gives it a chance to actually get that sugar and bitters mix up together. So I’m just going to give it a quick stir. The ice will start melting, add a little bit of water to the drink and mix the bitter and sugar together.
Now what I’m going to take and do is take my limes, hence again Tequila, Limes, Oranges aren’t quite the same thing. So when you use Lime instead of the Orange, using a vegetable peeler, just peel and slash of Lime Peel over top of the glass. Let us observe for a second.
Now we take our Tequila, we’re going to add 2 ounces of good Tequila. Since Tequila is basically the only ingredient here truly going to stand out quite a bit, so we don’t want to use cheaper Tequila.
Now for the Lime peels, such as that kind of these edges on it, I’m just going to take a knife and quickly square off the edges. Twist or begin over the top, try to give a little bit a curl to it, and just drop it in. Add a couple stripes, and there we have a Tequila Old Fashioned.
