Shalom, this is the fourth in a series of videos about Terms for the Introduction of Judaism Class. The topic here is Jewish Life Synagogue and Ritual objects.
The first term is Beit Knesset which means house of assembly. Synagogue is actually a Greek word for Beit Knesset. This is one of the three terms of ancient institutions that have merged into one for the modern Synagogue.
The second is beit Midrash which means the house of study. Beit means house where Torah learning takes place and the third is beit Filah. Filah is prayer so it should be house of prayer. So, the modern synagogue combines the house of assembly, the house of study and the house of prayer.
Next term is Gabbi wherein a Gabbi is a helper but today the term is most used with the person stands on the side of the Torah reader and helps the Torah reader and do other functions in the synagogue.
Next term is Sefer Torah, Torah course in the Five Books of Moses. Sefer means book so if you say Torah it is actually the scroll that we keep in the arc that contains the Torah.
Yad, that is a pointer, it is usually a metal or a wood object, long and the end of it there is often a little hand with a finger pointing. We use that to read the Torah so we do not actually touch the scroll when we are reading it so that we do not ruin it.
Beemah is the next term, the beamish is the performer or stage where we conduct our religious services.
Aron Hakodesh, aron is ark and hakodesh is the holy. That is where we keep our sefer Torah, our Torah scrolls.
Parohad the is the curtain that goes in front of the ark. That separates the ark from the rest of the congregation or sanctuary and this is something that was exactly original tabernacle in ancient times.
The next term is siddur or mafazur and for Ashkenazik European Jews the siddur which is based on the word saider which means order like a puzzle re-saider is the collection of prayers that we used daily in Sabbath and holidays.
Matzor is our term for the High Holiday prayer book we are also certain Nash Kanash that communities used what has caught a Macsore for the special holidays like pass over Shadow one and Succot. Other Jewish communities had different terms for those but see Duran Macasore the basic terms.
Neir Tamid that s the eternal light that hangs above every ark in a synagogue.
Shohan means table and that is actually the place where we read the Torah from, resonation of the ancient altar and the holy Tabernacles.
Rabbi is the term for teacher of Judaism. A term of ordination that has to be passed on from one rabbi to another which started about 2000 years ago during what we call the Rebenic period.
Hazan Acanter is the role of somebody who often who is ordained but does not have to be and that person is the one who leads services usually in the professional capacity today. There are other terms for late people or who are Emmy series of the coregation leading prayer called Shaleat Sibur. Now a days too we have positions called centurial soloist of people that only leads services maybe out of Friday night. Shaleat Sibur is the next term on a series of interrogation someone who would lead the prayers.
Balcorei is the next term that somebody who actually change the Torah in the Torah cancellation mode from the manuscript.
Mizrah, that is a special artistic hanging that is put in the eastern wall to designate the eastern wall to help guide Jews in the direction of prayer.
Mezuzah, I have youtubes on this objects. Mezuzah is a small object that hangs on the door post and it contains Torah scroll in it and it is based on the instructions from the Deuteronomy that says you should have a Mezuzah on the door post of your house and Mezuzah is the door post.
Sedaka box, that is a little container that you put charity money into it. is designated for some specific charity or you just collect it and then give into charities.
The next one is the Sefarim. A Sefar is a book sale while farim a Jewish holy books.
