Shalom, this video is about the 12 tribes of Israel but what are the 12 tribes? Well, the 12 tribes first of all are the 12 sons of the patriot Jacob. Jacob according to the Torah had 2 wives and two concubines, Rachel and Lea were the two wives. Each of these wives had sons and among the sons those are the 12 tribes. Rachel for example had Joseph and Benjamin, Benjamin being the youngest and very famous story about them ends up the book of genesis with Joseph being a slave and then becoming leader in Egypt and all the Mecanecians until all the tribes came down.
Each one gets married and they had family and children and that becomes the basis of the Jewish people. Now, the promise in the Torah is that once they get into the land of Israel, they will get the land and in fact that is what happens according to the book of Joshua and Judges and the Samuel and all the kings, they sold the lands and they divided up and each other have different place, the torah describes. In fact in the book of Numbers there is an interesting story about Roving the tribe, God in half of the tribe of Menasha where they say that Moses you know we like the land very much on the out in the out of Israel, we like to stay there in the East. Can we stay there and basically in Jordan and Moses at first was upset he thinks it is a betrayal and then finally got convinced them it is okay as long as they are sent there Amanda helps that another land and they can go back and live outside the land.
Now, when you look at the list of the tribes you maybe a little confuse and here is why. The 12 tribes of Israel include Joseph and include Levy. Levy is one of the 12 tribes but Levy and neither Joseph nor Levy gets any land. Levy’s job, in Israel are Levites and Cohanim priest come from most to take care of their cult, the sacrificial system, the temple, the part of tabernacle in the Nazareth, they did not get any land. They got their salaries essentially from the other 11 tribes. And Joseph did not get any land. So you subtract Levy and Joseph are ending with 10 tribes, How did you get 12? Well, Joseph his both their sons got equal shares they each got land as tribes but not shares of Ryan but that is how you get the 12 tribes of according to that out list and what happened to those tribes? Well, in 722 before 0 the Assyrians came down and conquer the 10 northern tribes and took them away and we lost them, we did not know what happened to them.
Those are the 10 tribes of Israel that are lost, well somebody thinks they know where they are but we do not really have any idea what happened to them. For all that was left in that point in 722 B.C.E. was the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin which had Jerusalem and then in 586 B.C.E. the Babylonian which are today’s Iraqis came and destroyed Judah and destroy the temple and took Jews who are there and mostly back to Babylonians where they leave the 2500 years. But they kept them in tact instead of the Assyrians technique of spreading them out and simulating them but the Babylonians allowed the Jews to stay together and they did and that is how they were preserved. So that is what happened to the 12 lost tribes and the 2 tribes that were left. The reason why we are called Jews today really is because we are descendants and in Judah. The tribe of Judah which is in Hebrews Yuhudan, Jews are called the Yuhudim.
So those are the 10 tribes and the most famous pictures of them comes from the Shigal windows, the great French artist Jewish artist Shigal did stay the last windows whether it is dash to ash aspire in Jerusalem based on the blessing that Jacob gave each of Sons at the end of its life in Deuteronomy and reflected and for those blessings are the various symbols. For example Judas well known as the symbol of the beautiful lion and each tribe has its own symbol, the 12 tribes of Israel.
