Julia: What needed to change was me. So, I sort of change myself what it was that I did on a daily basis, 15 months went by, 130 pounds were gone.
Sarah: Wow.
Julia: Yes, lots of changes. I divorced my husband, lost 130 pounds, single mom and I was scared, what is going to become of me? What is my future going to be like? And I did it. I changed and I got remarried and I wanted to shout from the highest mountain tops. I wrote my story to Women’s Road magazine. Just to say, “Look, look at what I did.” And they publish it and within the first week, something like 400 women wrote me or called me and said, “Nice story all about but how did you do it and can I do it, too?”
Sarah: Wow.
Julia: That is how it all started.
Sarah: That is amazing. While I try to read most the Vice Busting Diet and I found you are kind of, I guess, many people called your “Aha” moment like I need to make a change. It was really interesting. Can you tell me more about what made you realized finding out that you were ready to make a change.
Julia: First, my husband was leaving me. That was really a traumatic thing and I loved to say that was it. That sent me to towards a finally change did not happen. I was a little hell of scared. I had this lump on the back of my neck, I thought it was a tumor but it was a fat deposit. That was embarrassing but that sent me to the bakery and then finally what happened next, I went to buy a candy bar at the gas station, got out of my car, pulled out my shirt down, covered up my rear and my thighs, walked up to get a candy bar and this homeless guy was sitting on the side of the building and he started heckling me. He started shouting “damn girl. You have got too much food in you.”
Every one pumping gas was cracking up to them. It was the funniest thing that I have ever heard. To me, I was humiliated. I was mortified. I was mad at him. I got in the car, gestured at him, drove away, open up my candy bar. It did not comfort me. It did not have whatever food that is given, suddenly it just was not there. And I thought about the words that man used. He did not make fun of me. He did not call me fat. He said, “You have too much food in you.” And I thought about that and I took a good long hard look at me and about my life and I realized I do have too much food.
But specifically what? What one thing could I say I eat too much of? It was ice cream. Every night, just about every single night usually I have half a gallon and I said, “Okay, I will start it there, Mr. Smart, homeless guy and I will show you I can change.” I did not eat it for like a week and I thought I do miss it. It is not that too bad. I went a month. I was surprised at myself then I went two months, three months. Had to spur our sewing machine to sew in and take a seam in on my clothes again. And I thought, “No way I am ever eating ice cream again.”
What is next? What do eat too much of now? Fast food, I just thought methodically one thing at a time. Cut out the unhealthy food and I am never going back. Never. I have never buy ice cream in 14 years. Nothing.
Sarah: Oh my gosh! Wow! That is pretty intense. Good for you. Congratulations. So, that is basically what you talk about in the Vice Busting Diet so whatever one has around vice it might be differently the top three. You said they were fast food, soft drinks and TV/sedentary life styles.
Julia: Soft drinks, what people do not realized, it seems so innocent, you are thirsty, you have it to dinner. It just seems so natural to order soft drink.
