Acura calls the ZDX a sports coupe. Now the purists might disagree given that this thing is built on the MDX sport utility platform. It has a V6 engine, mounted transversely under the hood. And it has Honda's super handling all wheel drive system. It has SUV styled ride height and an SUV styled seating position. But it does have a cramped cabin and I guess these days anything with function has been subsumed by form deserves to be called a sports coupe. And Honda has certainly tried hard to make the Acura ZDX look sporty.
This the first vehicle designed entirely in-house in Acura's all new 15 million dollar studio in Torrance, California. The Acura studio is taking Acura design away from Honda. The two design studios are now completely separate, and Acura is working on its own design language. Now I was prepared to hate the ZDX, I am no fan of the Acura TL. But I have to say this looks pretty impressive in the metal. It's very rakish, very sporty, and very stylish. It's really going to cut quite a dash on the streets when its released later this year.
Those specific words on details yet, but you can expect Acura's new 3.7 liter V6 with 305 hp, will be a logical choice for the powertrain. It will drive for an all new six speed automatic transmission, which will have a pedal shift control.
The Acura design is flamboyant and its made major changes to the platform. The b-pillar has been pushed back so the front door openings are a little wider, give you a coupe like feeling and the C-pillar has been pushed right in, to give the car pronounced shoulder. Honda sources say that rear quarter panel on this is the deepest drawer in the company's history and has the sharpest line ever. It's a really striking car and I predict it would do big business for Acura.
