I dislike how many of these comments are making it seem like the inventors are a naïve or something. Here's a quote from the IDEO team: “In its current state, the Aquaduct is a prototype aimed squarely at demonstrating a concept and raising awareness around the issues of clean water in developing countries. The Aquaduct team plans to continue the concept’s development into an economically and technologically viable solution that addresses challenges such as cost, suitable purification technologies, and the logistics of addressing an issue that [affects] billions.” I'd say they're being quite realistic and are aptly pointing out that systems to purify water in developing areas are within reach. Try not to be so quick to shoot such concepts down, because it's the people who develop concepts such as this bike that provide hope for change.

what can seem like an amazing idea for you in the west it will seem for the poor like no idea! ... the culture and environment they living in won't allow such toy looking fragile thing to do its job! kids will ride them and race in 20% slop! they are going to fill it with stones... also they don't have freaking smooth pavements to roll this thing. The accidental Martian like terrain will mean for them the extra involvement of the fix and pay for parts also they have to consider the place to park this thing, they don't have beautiful front garden with garage with lovely neighbourhood, you leave such thing outside it will be gone in no time! instead of experimenting with this poor people like Lab rats, try to find out what is not working in their society and try to fix it and push them to get close to your standards of living! which you have expertise and proof that it works!!!

Works for the hippie who wants to feel like they are making the world better but has absolutely no value in the real world. As some have stated before, the bike is too weak, too expensive, will get you killed, does not hold enough water (one container per trip, lol). Basically another example of some kids thinking a small scale operation like a bike powered filter will change the world, people need large scale pumps and filters. Why give out 100 extremely expensive idiot bikes when you should just install a industrial grade pump and filter at the water source and with the huge amounts of money saved you could actually improve the community. Nice try but so worthless.

I love that you care and that you want to find a solution, but this wont work in Africa for example. nice shiny blue thing like that could get you killed for it,and in the african bush those wheels would be eaten by thorns as well as on a rainy equatorial day mud will eat it too

This is great...so how many are being donated to poverty stricken countries? How many multi-billion dollar companies are financing this?

I like it, but why don't people just move closer to the water?
