The Assasination of Alexander I

It wasn’t just the place but the day itself that was infamous for King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. Having had three of his family members die on a Tuesday he usually made it a rule not to carry out any public functions on that day for week, on Tuesday the 9th of October 1934 however, 45 year old dictator was forced to make and exemption. That was the day he arrived in Marseille in the South of France and the Yugoslavia of the destroyer, the Dubrovnik. He was making a state visit and hoping to strengthen in their lives between the two countries. He was met by the French Foreign Minister Louis Barthou.

As the King and Barthou draw through the streets a gunman emerge from the crowd and shot both Alexander and the chauffeur dead. Other two was also shoot but by a French policeman reacting to the confusion he died later. The assassin Vlado Chernozemski were drive off the leader of the internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization.

The remarkable footage of King Alexander’s death cameraman wait on the spot as it happens makes this one as the most historical murders stories. And it wasn’t only Alexander’s death that captured on the film. His killer Chernozemski was cut down by the sword of a French mounted policeman he was then attack by the crowd and also killed.

Alexander’s body was returned home in the Devronic he was buried at the memorial church of Saint George, which has been build, by his father before eventually being transferred to a mausoleum and buried as his will stipulated. Yugoslavia was then ruled by a regent Prince Paul until the signing of the tripart tight pact with Nazi in power in 1941.
