Dr. Barry Hainer: My conclusion on the Autism vaccine debate and typically the suspect vaccine has been mumps, measles, rubella is that there is no scientific evidence and strong research that shows that there isn't any relationship between the development of Autism and the administration of any vaccine including mumps, measles and rubella.
I just received a fax so not more than a few days ago from the Centers for Disease Control that looked at measles experience in the United States from January through the end of April of 2008 there were 64 cases reported in US residence and of these 20 of the cases were in toddlers under the age of 15 months you would not yet been vaccinated and 21 were in cases were in children 18 months to adolescence through 19 years of age of those 21, 14 were individuals that claimed exemptions from vaccinations due to religious and personal believes and the other 7 were unvaccinated due to delays or missed opportunities when they sort medical care.
18 were over 20 years of age and 14 had unknown vaccination status to acquire their measles while traveling in Europe and one had documentation or previously receiving to doses of mumps, measles and rubella vaccine. So the take home message is measles is still here and with us, it can be a dangerous and deadly disease, it can be just as far as a plane ride away because there are places in this world where measles is still potentially epidemic and can be transmitted, it's important that we provide out toddlers with their first dose of mumps, measles and rubella just as soon as they are eligible at 12 months of age.
And as frequently happens the group at highest risk for contracting measles and other vaccine associated illnesses where those children who are not vaccinated for a one of many different reasons and as was illustrated in the fact that one individual who developed the measles had previous documentation of two vaccinations earlier, the vaccines are quite effective but they are not a 100% effective, they may be 95% or 98% effective but their will be a few individuals who will not have or will have waning of their immunity overtime, there is this gentlemen was over 20 years of age and I would imagine those two doses mumps, measles and rubella were provided to him quite a few years before he had his case of measles.
So you may have had a waning or drop off in the antibody protection against measles that another booster dose might have provided for him.
