Clubhouse Gas
Casey: Today on Clubhouse Gas pitching coach from the University of Georgia and friend of the show Brady Weiderhold joins us for knee drill number 2 so stay tuned.
Brady: The second drill that I use, what do you think the name of this. Knee drill number 2, there you go, alright. I told you highly technical terms I got going here. Alright you got knee drill number 1 leads in the knee drill number 2. Now do it from the side here and again it start out exactly the same gentlemen, alright exactly the same. Right knees down, left knees up, left knees whoop! You reverse and we come set just the same. We’re going to break our hands just the same.
Now make sure get on top, get on top of the baseball on the back no matter which method you use that’s between you and your coach and when you see me some day we’ll decide that draping with the front side keeps everything locked and loaded here. Again not to here, not straight out just nice and lose so we got good pendulum here swinging. Now what you’ll notice is I’m up on my toe a little bit on the back side. Turn this way.
If I was going towards on the back wall notice I’m on my toe a little bit on the back side, alright. I’m going to start at the legs, alright. To simple drills and basically will take us to the whole pitching process it’s amazing and break it down. Where we go here, turn our shoulders break the hands, alright, we wouldn’t slow it down this much, you know once you get rolling it’s one continuous motion what we did here on top now as I start to rotate my shoulders I’m going for nose over toes. I’m going to reach out and touch the catcher’s glove.
Alright the same time now as I go forward. I’m going to kick up, and over the top of my back leg. I’m going to add the legs so many guys don’t use their legs. Alright, I have a term that I use when the guy is running all the time. They gripe and moan about all the time. Now I say I use the term from the movie miracle I don’t know how many guys have seen that movie with the USA hockey team and the said the legs feed the wolf, the legs feed the wolf.
Well I use that all the time and I’m just barking. Leg’s feed the wolf and they’re running well because we’re trying to get these things strong in endurance. You know you got to have your legs, you got to be able to use your legs gentlemen. So many people don’t do that. These days because they just fall and just be there lazy or what have you. They don’t really kick through and pop those hips with that bottom half of their body so what we do is we just do this drill.
And again you see you can do these type of things till your blue in the face because you’re not 60 plus inches, you’re not trying the long toss you can do can do whatever single day if you want to. You’re not putting strain on your body. Alright so you got my partner over there again and whatever might grip maybe break the hand and on top like I said draping on the front reach out and touch the glove, take the leg over whoop! Kick the leg over the top, alright.
And what happens is you start to condition yourself to use your legs and drive that back leg, alright and really kick that thing through and then what you’ll notice when I finished, alright and I have come through the pit. I finish in a basic athletic position, alright and I don’t want to say you know if you’re 6 year old then I’m going to say oh Jimmy I want you to you know get a good fueling position, the ball is going to come back at you.
Well that’s a good term but I mean that’s not the term we’re using necessarily when you know when we get older but I want you to finish in a decent athletic position at the end. Everything is that way, alright. I don’t know how many of you guys play basketball or have played basketball in the past but I’ll guarantee you one thing. If you have ever played hoops I’ll bet you, you don’t get out there and play defense like this.
I hope not. You can’t move, alright. Michael Jordan, I mean he’s pretty good. I think if I went one on one with old Michael and he was going to play defense like this and he’s pretty good I may be able to get a— maybe be able to get a shot off him because I would give him ahead you. I’ll give him one and he can’t move like this. I may be able to get worn off but he’s going to get mad. He’s going to crush me but if he’s going to play defense like that I got him.
I don’t know how many of you guys play football but I’ve never seen a linebacker coming in there, the playoffs are today and never seen a linebacker come in like this you stick somebody in the middle of the lock. If you do that, you’re going to get steam rolling, right. Whatever cleats their wearing is going right through their face. Tiger Woods in Golf, never seen him take off like this. He might be behind a tree and much better than the most of us, get it out, but I never seen him tea off like that.
Hitting wise earlier, I don’t know how many people heard Turtle talk our very dear friends. We were together at LSU for the 5 years, alright and I never ones in all the speeches I have heard Turtle give about hitting where any coach that I have heard to do a speech about hitting had their feet close together and hit like this. That doesn’t happen you get a little a wide base, you’re athletic alright that’s the way sports are played.
And then I go see a pitcher, alright, we’re going to make everybody into a pitcher and I go see the sky pitch, you get stuff there big guy. Big eye balls got sign comes through knows his motion. Boom! He’s feet fall close together and he’s feet are too close together and what happens to their momentum and their power and everything else. It goes off to the side. It can’t keep it in that straight line. Alright it’s very difficult.
If your legs come close together like that to keep any momentum and power gong towards the plate alright. And so that’s why we want to hop on having an athletic base boom when we finish. Now are we going to finish exactly straight probably not. Alright like you’re hunkered in there about to take him on offensive guard that’s not going to happen most of the times, most of the times there’s going to be a little bit of a turn as you follow all the way through and finish nose over toes and reach out and touch the glove, alright but we finish in that athletic base, alright.
And again I use, I mean you use anybody there’s smokes here. Just watch the guy just Maddux and Glavin and all those guys. When they finish, even Maddux is hop, right. How do you think he has 9,200 goal gloves because finishes like this and he is just trying to scoop. He’s got a good base at the end, great athletic base at the end, alright and that’s how you want to be as a pitcher as well. It’s how you want to finish.
