So as I mentioned before, we can grab the Rectangular Marquee tool, and again if you want to follow along, and it is not what you have, you could hold down the left mouse button, or simply right click here on the second slot down on the tools pallet and select the Rectangular Marquee tool. We will be talking about the Elliptical Marquee tool in just a second.
So again, if I want to make a selection area the size of a box, I can click and drag, and as long as I am still holding mouse button, I could resize that box to whatever shape that I want. It is pretty convenient. Now again I am going to hit ctrl-D to deselect that, and let us go over underneath the Rectangular Marquee tool to the Elliptical Marquee tool, and actually for this, I am going to zoom out.
I am going to go to this blank area of asphalt here so it is a little bit easier to see what I am doing, but I can click and drag and instead of a rectangular shape, I have an elliptical shape. So basically a circle of other forms of ovals here, and we can adjust and tweak that. And that is very important that you do not let go of your mouse until you are happy with the selection, because once you let go of your mouse, it will accept the selection that you have made.
This is very simple right now, but as we start adding keyboard shortcuts, which we will a few segments down the road here, we will start to see this gets very complicated. So again, once you are happy with the selection, let go of the mouse first, and that will accept your selection, and you will be happy.
Now to select just basic circles and squares is not super exciting. For example, we are going to select this background of the sky, well we could not do that very easily with just circles and squares. So primarily what I use circles and squares for is just filling with color. For example, if I wanted to fill this with white, I could use the keyboard shortcut alt+backspace or alt+delete on the main area of the keyboard on the Mac, and that will fill that with white.
So we could go through and add some bubbles, and little or maybe make this black, and make it a pothole that somebody is going to fall into, or something, but I do not know. But I could do that using that keyboard shortcut and it fills in this shape, because I used the Marquee tools to do that.
Now I am just going to undo that by hitting ctrl+Z, or command Z, and actually I deselect it, so I am going to have to go back a little bit farther by hitting ctrl+alt+Z, and then I could deselect that, ctrl+D to deselect. Now I realized that these two tools seem simple, and they are very simple , but at the same time in a few segments down the road here, we are going to add a lot of sweet extras to these little helpers, but again that is coming up in just a little bit.
For now let us talk about ways that we could have a little bit more control over our selections by doing stuff more than just circles and squares. We are going to talk about the Lasso tools.
