Hello everyone and thank you for tuning in to inside geek Canada my name is Evan Thies and before getting into the topic I just want to talk a few things that is going on inside geek Canada. First we got our camera back as you can see by the new angle and it is a HP camera so hopefully the quality is a bit better than the other camera that I am using and the other news is about Logan and you know you heard that is my co-host and he helps me produce the show and you probably realize it I have not seen a video from him yet. Well because he is really busy with work right now so you will see a video from him in the future but he will not be producing the amount I am but he will be making appearance on the camera once or twice you know doing his videos and you know kind of interacting with the community hopefully.
Anyway today’s topic is based on how to make a website. Now this is for very beginners this is not for someone that you know already have a website or anything. This is basically the very basics that you need to get on the web and host a website online.
So one of the big misconceptions I see is people confusing locally host of content and host of content on web that is available to everyone. Now say you have a word file and it is on your desk top and you want to send to a friend and you say well here is the link and it is like file (..//) you know my documents you know the document (..) something like that well obviously I can not get that cause that is locally host on your file system same thing with images that people posted on like a website like that it is not going to work.
For images, you can upload it to place like photo bucket or flicker and then people can access that. Before website if you want your own your own website there are couple of things you have to do. First you have to buy domain name and by that I mean something when you type in the address bar, it will go to your website. So that could be something like a .com, a .net .org, .it, .us, .ca they go on and on and they typically range from five dollars to maybe 50 dollars a year depending if you get a really expensive top level kind of one.
The next thing you need to look at is web hosting and I will make a future video on companies that recommend for web hosting but basically web hosting is a place that gives you space and band with to host your files so you do not have them on you desktop or anything like that. Its equivalent of having a hard drive basically, they give you a certain amount of space on there servers that you can put files on. Web host can range from any where from you know a few dollars a month to a few hundred if you are getting a dedicated buck or something like that that is where you are interested in.
This web host will also allow you to have thing like you your email addresses at your domain, things like that and you can keep track statistics if that is important to you and you can do back up every files, things like that kind on this website.
Let us have an example say you are just someone you just want to share your wedding photos that you have say last month and you just want to put them on a website but display them in a nice way so every domain in your web hosting that is great. Next, what you need to do is upload those files know that can be done trough a FTP client and I will make another video on FTP clients as well or it can be done directly trough the hosting service that they have a little thing that you can navigate and upload the files and then you can simply you know put them even in word you know put them in word export as in HTML and upload that file and that should work and that should work and that will be your local space in the internet.
Now you can just upload the pictures directly and send people straight to the pictures as well that would work to. Now say you just want a nice you know looking website but you do not know how to code or you have never done that with HTML before. Well that is fine, there
