Anne Diamond: Does chewing gum keep your metabolism going? After exhausting research, I have found that chewing gum apparently burns about 11 calories an hour. I think that's better than nothing if you are absolutely desperate. Other than that, it doesn't boost your metabolic rate in any meaningful manner, may be it'll stop you putting food into your mouth though.
However British research has reckon, they have come up with a chewing gum that will suppress the appetite of anyone using it, because it slowly releases a substance into the body that makes the use of filled food. The substance is based on the body's actual hormone that tells the brain to stop eating once a large meal has been consumed. The drug may soon be available, but honestly don't hold your breathe, it sounds too good to be true and probably is. I am told laboratory tests so far have been encouraging. Human volunteers, who were given the drug, reduced their food consumption 15-20% without feeling hungry.
Mice, who administered the drug, lost 15% of their body weight in one week's time, wow. Researches say more testing is needed, but that the drug could be on the market within a few years. They say it could be delivered in a variety of ways besides chewing gum including as a nasal spray or an injection.
