The Benefits of Early Intervention

The question of preventive interventions for people with psychotic disorders is something that's received a lot of attention. It's very difficult to predict who amongst people who are at risk will develop psychosis and who will not. So it makes it very challenging to provide preventive services. But there is a growing body of data that suggests that providing early intervention services for people who are beginning to show signs that might be suggestive of psychosis can have a positive impact on the illness. There are data to suggest that for people, who actually develop psychosis, the longer they wait the worse the outcome they have. It's hard to know why that is, but it does seem to be a very reliable fact. It's also true that very early in the course of illnesses, including schizophrenia, the treatment response is much better and more complete. Obviously, our goal is to have people be free of symptoms. So we know that it's just better to start early.
