Dr. Susan Sharma: This is insidermedicine in 60. From Buffalo, reducing TV and computer time by 50% can lower BMI in children. Researchers randomized 70 four to seven year olds to either a 50% reduction in screen time or no restrictions. Those in the restricted time group had their time reduced in increments of 10% per week and were rewarded with incentives. The reduction in screen time lowered BMI, independent of an increase in activity level.
From Perth, low testosterone levels may raise the risk of depression in elderly men. While depression is more common in women in those under the age of 65, it affects men and women equally after 65. Researchers, studying nearly 4000 elderly men, noted that 5% of the sample suffered from depression, and that depression was 3 times more likely to appear in those in the lowest quintile of testosterone.
And finally from Louisiana, snow and rain may contain high levels of the bacteria, pseudomonas. Most snow and rain forms high in the atmosphere and needs something to coalesce around in order to form properly. According to snow samples obtained from places ranging from the Yukon to the Antarctic, that something is the bacteria pseudomonas. While this bacteria can be a pathogen in humans the species identified is known to only affect plants. For insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma from Queen's University.
