Host: What are the benefits of studying in a group?
Amanda Medders: There are many benefits to studying in a group but one thing that you want to keep in mind before you decide to study in a group is who you’re studying with.
It’s great to study with your best friends but if they are going to be more of a distraction and you’re going to be talking more than studying, those may not be the best people for your study group.
You want to make sure that you have people that are in your classes that are at around the same level as you when you’re studying.
One thing that can be very beneficial about studying in a group is often times, different people are going to have a different understanding or a better understanding of concepts than you may have.
These people can help you understand the concept by presenting it in a different way than you may have seen it in class or in your textbook.
On the flip side of that, maybe you understand the concept better than one of your friends. If that is the case, it can be helpful for you to teach someone else. This really helps to commit things to memory.
I know in my own experience, I’ve had a lot of learning that has taken place just by me teaching it to somebody else.
Another way that studying in a group can be a benefit is because often times, other people in your class may have come across different study aids or different techniques for studying that you may find helpful but may not of already thought off.
It’s also motivating. You already have a group that you’ve committed to. You’ve told them a time. You’ve told them a place. And it’s harder to back out of that study session if you’ve already made a commitment to a group of people.
