Tom: Welcome to Cnet Top Five, where each time we meet we count down another hot Cnet list, I'm Tom Merritt. Next to a talking animal, the robot, is man’s favorite TV sidekick. But in the annals of TV robots, and were counting androids here too, only a few outshine the shiny metal of all the others. Adversary or friend, these TV robots must receive their due. Let's countdown the top five best TV robots.
At number five, Rosie the robot. She was the Jetson’s house keeper, model XV500. Rosie was based loosely on the main character of the sitcom Hazel, and named after Rosie the riveter. Her boyfriend was named Mac, not PC.
Rosie: Here I am sir.
Tom: Coming in at number four. Robot from Lost in Space. Do it with me everyone, wave your arms and shout, danger Will Robinson! Really, he makes the list just for that iconic call alone, but what was his full name, model, and class? Stay with us.
Will: I know my dad told you to watch me. But can't you close your eyes even for a minute?
Robot: It does not compute.
Tom: Up to number three. The Cylon. Whether it’s the old centurion with the red thing going back and forth. The reimagined scarier centurion, looks like it could pretty much kill you at any moment, the Raider or right, the sultry Caprica 6. Okay, it’s mostly 6, but don’t forget, the Cylon’s mission was to eliminate humanity. I guess that’s why they're not number one.
Female: Are you alive?
Tom: Sliding in at number two, Bender Bending Rodriguez and designated bending unit 22. Bender. He’s your typical alcohol powered woman chasing gambler robot, kind you meet every day. And if you don’t like him, you can bite his shiny metal ass.
Robot: Tell us Bender, are you worthy of membership in the league?
Bender: Worthier than the average robot.
Tom: Before we get to number one, time for a little trivia. Now we mention Robot from Lost in Space earlier, what was his full model number, class, and robot type? Be one of the first ten people to correctly answer out our blog.cnnettv.com and you could be the proud owner of not only this old school Cnet tote bag signed by Raife Needleman, but also of mass effect for XBox 360 which includes robots.
Alright, let's get to our number one. The coolest best robot based on your opinions on Twitter as well as our board of impartial judges. At number one, it’s Data. This was overwhelming. He received a full 35% more votes on Twitter and Facebook than any other robot or android. I could say Data express what it is to be human better than any actual human character ever has. I couldn’t say he’s naivety and thirst for knowledge inspired us all to remain curious and hungry for learning or I could just say he was fully functional.
Data: Quite extraordinary in fact.
Tom: Thanks to everyone on Twitter and Facebook who post of their suggestions for the list. We have more than 60 robots suggested, many of them more movie robots, not everybody is good at following directions. I'm going to post the full list at our blog, blog.cnettc.com, where you can answer the trivia question and maybe win the tote bag and the Mass Effect game. And you know what, what the hey, I'm going to throw in this shiny penny. The economy is rough.
That’s it for this edition of Cnet Top Five, I'm Tom Merritt. See you next time.
