The Best, Cheapest Underwater Camera Casing
Ben Freedman: Hi, there and welcome to Neo-Fight.tv, the technology reviews with two points of view. My name is Ben Freedman.
Tiffany Young: And I’m Tiffany Young and today is Friday, September1st and on Friday is that’s the day that we answer some of your e-mail questions. We’ve got some great questions this week. The first one is, “I want to take my video camera under water but cases are thousands of dollars. Is there a cheaper solution?” And I do have one thought that came directly to my head as soon as I saw this question and then I just brought the Olympus stylus SW. It’s a camera -
Ben Freedman: A still camera.
Tiffany Young: A still camera.
Ben Freedman: Not a video cam.
Tiffany Young: Right, thank you. It’s a 7.1 megapixel, we did a review on some of it’ pack and that camera actually takes really good underwater photography as well because it’s a waterproof camera.
Ben Freedman: And also video.
Tiffany Young: Photography and video, thank you Ben.
Ben Freedman: Sure. It’s Friday.
Tiffany Young: What would I do without Ben? So anyways, so it takes really good underwater video granted now you’re still on camera mode but the video quality is really good and you could do still as well video in short captions. One thing I did noticed when I was watching our last home video from what we got on the beach in California, I was looking at our video and I was, Oh my gosh this is boring. How much more sand can I get or how many more birds are you know –
Ben Freedman: You just have boring vacation.
Tiffany Young: No it wasn’t boring vacation it was just you know wrong and I used my Olympus, the video mode on that and I noticed like I got some really fun, quick you know moments snapshot here and there because it’s portable -
Ben Freedman: And you only took this short little video.
Tiffany Young: And just a short video so you only get a moment or two and then you kind of put that all together -
Ben Freedman: Unless you’re like me that video tapes our entire vacation, which I love to do.
Tiffany Young: Yeah no I don’t do that, unless you’re like Ben, right.
Ben Freedman: There are also some of the new sort of consumer cameras have much, much cheaper cases, or housings since they’re cold. For instance I have that new little high def Sony, called the HC3 high def camcorder we reviewed again a month or so back. I love this camcorder and it has housing, it’s only like $200.00 for the housing, you know. Normally a lot of—
Tiffany Young: That’s a good deal.
Ben Freedman: It is, a lot of the housings you know it used to be should bought a camera for a thousand bucks and I was like $3,000.00 for the housing. Now this is not scuba diving housing, it’s not going to take you down to 100 feet. But if you’re in swimming pool or snorkeling or just, near the surface, couple hundred bucks its great deal for housing.
Tiffany Young: You know but the only thing I want to remind our viewers up with the HD is that you really do need a strong powerhouse computer in order to process the video.
Ben Freedman: Yeah but this little housing I mean you just—
Tiffany Young: But the housing is cheap, no I agree.
Ben Freedman: Let’s not do an argument about HD again okay? Let’s leave that one rest.
Tiffany Young: Okay all right I’ll go with that but the housing is cheap.
Ben Freedman: The housing is cheap like there is other Sony, this is a Sony, they’re regular def standards.
Tiffany Young: Non- high def.
Ben Freedman: Non-high def once it also have these inexpensive housings from Sony. So if you don’t already have a video camera, you may want to check out the ones from Sony the have the inexpensive housings. Our next question, this actually takes me back to a show we did a couple of weeks back and we reviewed a little hard drive by Pexagon and you’d asked is there any way to encrypt the files. And we have this question that came in as well so I thought it was act pro quoi. I have some sensitive files on my computer, is there a way to encrypt just those files? And I looked around on the web for an answer for you because I know how concerned you are about those files and there’s a program called TrueCrypt. Up with the link to the web site on there, I think it’s truecrypt.com, very, very simple, free program, very, very small and basically you create a folder on your hard drive so you can put everything on there or if you just want to crypt a folder, put everything on there. Create a folder on your hard drive and you give it a password and true crypt will then encrypt everything in to that folder when you write to it and then when you read from it. Everything is completely encrypted and you have to enter the password in to the true crypt. There are two down side first of all, anytime you put it on the computer you have to have true crypt on the computer as well. So you can’t just give that to your buddy who doesn’t have true crypt you know, he won’t be able to decrypt it. You got to have true crypt on there to decrypt it. And the other problem is if you loose password you’re done.
Tiffany Young: yeah there is no way to get your files back if you loose your password, that’s it.
Ben Freedman: So if you’re the kind of person who looses passwords and that’s going to stop, be very careful because this is -
Tiffany Young: It’s dangerous it could be very dangerous.
Ben Freedman: Yeah this is like military grade you know encryption on there. And it’s very sleek, work great, it will protect your files but it will protect them from yourself if you loose the password.
Tiffany Young: Right, yeah I definitely would say proceed with caution, I mean hey that’s the answer to my question, which I was you know and same as, our viewers too. And what we’re looking for about at the same. Could you imagine? Could be a very bad day, wouldn’t it? It’s just be right here bring it on and I was like, “What is the password?”
Ben Freedman: It’s not like you’re mother is crushed, your files is there but you can’t remember. And that’s all the time we have for Neo-Fight.tv this week.
