Do your part for your pets and that includes the kind of kitty litter you buy. There are no use of cat owners out there, and many of them opt for clay based kitty litter that contains sodium bentonite. This clumping kind of kitty litter is dangerous for lots of reasons. Dust from the litter is made up of tiny silicon particles that are toxic and known to cause cancer.
Those particles can also cause respiratory or digestive problems for you cats, and for the environment the clay is actually strip mined in order to create the kitty litter and that clay is not renewable.
The good news is that there are better choices out there. Cat owners can now choose from cat litter made from 100% recycled paper, reclaimed wood chips or even whole kernel corn. And to help you battle odors, use inexpensive, non-toxic baking soda at the bottom of the litter pan, all of these natural solutions are not harmful to the environment.
That's not true for regular kitty litter. Those toxic chemicals can actually seep into our soil and water supply once they end in a landfill. And here is an eye-opener for you, about two million tons of used cat litter goes to the landfill every year.
Buying eco-friendly kitty litter is just one easy way to tread lightly on our planet, reduce our eco-footprint and keep our pets and family healthy.
