Steve Turrano welcome to this episode of body performance. At the urging of my friend and client Andrea, I am going to make a few comments about the show the biggest loser.
I am not sure where they get these personal trainers from but they have a few things to learn. When you have people who are excessively overweight, 75 pounds or more, and they are really out of shape, the cardio that they re supposed to be doing is something that is easy, something that is gradual, that they can do for long periods of time. This will do a couple of things. It will prevent injury, it will prevent heart attacks. It will prevent people puking their guts out. It will prevent people from crying and hating you for the rest of their lives.
You see when people are really out of shape, they cannot exercise with great intensity because it turns their cardiovascular activity into and anaerobic exercise. So what you have to do is have them exercise gradually and easily and that allows them to do it for long periods of time. The longer they can do it the more fat they will burn. So what you have to do with cardio is forty five minutes to an hour three times a day and I would have them not do calisthenics. That is the worst thing that these people could be doing. You have the three hundred pound guy or the two hundred fifty pound woman who has never exercised and they are expected to do a push up? They are using their own body weight. How is a lady going to do a 250 push up or they had these people lunging.
My God! If you lunge a 250 pound, do you know how much pressure that puts on your knee? No. Just bring him into the weight room. Into the gym and have him use the weight lifting equipment. That is what it is designed for. That way you can control the weight and the motion. Do not have him use free weighs or if you do, do not allow them to lift it over their heads, Too dangerous. Do not sit them on balls do not bounce them in one foot. Just put them in the weight room three times a week.
So we need gradual easy cardio, done often and for long periods of time and we need weight room activity three times a week, less dangerous okay. No crying, no screaming no puking and then people can actually incorporate that in their daily lives and then do it on their own but who wants somebody yelling and screaming at them, making them do all this things that they could possibly never do on their own but then again it does not make good television.
Love your body. I will see you next time.
