Another value proposition I’m going to throw out at you is this whole security issue that Mac’s are innately more secure than Windows PC, including Vista and Windows Seven.
Now, I’ve heard the argument, ‘Security through obscurity’. That’s one thing you’ll hear out there, ‘Security through obscurity’. Because there are a few people that use Apple, virus writers and people like that don’t fool with it because it’s too small, the market shouldn’t even worry about, right? That is one argument that we’ve heard. Then we’ve heard another argument. It says, you know, look, the whole Operating System of a Mac is based ultimately on very --, extremely secure no matter what, it’s always going to be more secure than Widows. You don’t have immediate access to the super user’s account, -- account. All these sort of stuff is just going to be more secure, period. So that’s another argument.
Now, what I’m not hearing about though, I should say what I’m hearing about is that Vista, the security really tightened up. Big time with the… security really tightened up the internet action of Vista. You don’t see Vista machines getting quite as infected with viruses, Trojans, malware, spyware than XP machines did. And Windows Seven improves that. And then of course Microsoft is going to be giving a free antivirus product of its own, so I think it’s in ‘beta’ right now, but ultimately you’re going to get free antivirus protection for Microsoft in addition to the Windows Defender which takes care of spyware, malware, Trojan, etcetera.
It doesn’t appear on the surface that many Vista or Windows Seven users are going to have the issues with viruses and so forth that XP did. So I don’t think it’s fair today to say that OS 10 is greatly more secure than Windows Seven machine. But Windows Seven will come under more attack because it does have a larger footprint. There is some truth, I think there is a little bit of truth to this whole ‘Security through obscurity’ model. I don’t think you can really discount that. So I’m going to say that the value proposition for security is probably, I would still have to give that to a Mac, but not by much if you got a shop that’s set up on Windows Seven. Now comparing shops running Mac’s compared to a shop running XP, there’s no question in mind that you’re ultimately way more secure with your Mac shop than you’re ever going to be with XP.
