The COBRA Health Subsidy Begins to Expire
Beginning today, many Americans will start paying a lot more for health insurance once
their 15th month Federal Cobra Premium Subsidy runs out. These are the people who
started receiving the premium in March of last year when it first became available to laid-
off workers looking to stay on their former employer’s plan. Well those receiving the
subsidy generally pay about one-third of the premium, while the government picked up
two-thirds.
The government is about to make sure you get more money if you’re bumped off a flight.
An announcement is expected this week that would raise the maximum amount carriers
must pay bumped passengers. They now pay $400 or $800 depending on how long a trip
is delayed. Passenger rights groups want that raise to $800 and $1200.
Apple has sold 2 million iPads in less than 60 days. The company said Monday at
struggling that keep with demand both here and overseas. It was introduced this weekend
in nine more countries.
And the Queen of England wants a pay raise. British tax payers gave the Crown the
equivalent of $11.5 million a year to run the palace but apparently, that’s not enough.
Right now, the palace is $9 million over budget.
