Despite the steady rise in fuel costs, SUVs continue to enjoy great popularity. There are the mainstream ones from VW, Opel, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi and then there are some lesser known models that are just as interesting. Among others, the Honda CR-V, and the C-Crosser from Citroën.
The Honda CR-V is a low-priced all-round vehicle from Japan with a dynamic look, independent design, and automatically engaging all-wheel drive. To power the CR-V, buyers have the choice of two engines. A two liter gasoline powered variant with 150 horsepower and a 2.2 liter diesel with 140 horsepower. A 6-speed manual transmission is part of the standard package.
The Citroën C-Crosser is the elegant type. The French company views it as the alternative to the premium class. Here too, all-wheel drive is a standard item. This one has to be manually engaged. The power plants for the C-Crosser are stronger than those for the Honda CR-V. There is a 2.4 liter gasoline engine with 170 horsepower and a 2.2 liter 156 horsepower diesel engine.
Based on looks alone, the C-Crosser resembles a robust generously dimensioned Station Wagon. The double chevrons at the front typical of a Citroën. At the back a tall tail end with a low loading edge with the lower portion of the tailgate opening separately.
The variable seating configuration allows you to turn a five seater into a seven seater. The interior has a sophisticated and upscale feel. Quite different from the Honda CR-V which looks much more like a typical SUV.
It's distinguishing characteristics, the semicircular window line at the side. Vertical tail lights make the CR-V more slender than it actually is. The 60/40 split rear seats slide forwards and back and fold away and vanish completely behind the front seats.
The interior of the Honda is mainly practical, the craftsmanship quite good. The equipment is excellent on both cars. Front, side, and head airbags, ESP, fog lights, light and rain sensor, cruise control, power Windows, and side mirrors as well as heated seats and air conditioning come standard on both the C-Crosser and the CR-V.
The pricing for both models is far apart. While the Honda sells for just under €25,000, be prepared to pay at least 31,750 for the Citroën. For that money, at least you get more exclusivity.
