The Common Causes of Knee Pain
Thanks to this. It can be tough to tell the difference between your average ache and something more serious. Now, there are few common causes for knee pain. There’s over use injuries like tendonitis, there’s degenerative like arthritis and then there’s the acute injuries tears we’ve heard about, ACL tears. Well, let’s first talk about patellar tendonitis.
This is a knee model. Okay. The patellar is the name of the kneecap, that’s the medical term. So the patellar tendon attaches right here. In this area, it gets very inflamed in some people and especially people who are running a lot, jumping. Those motions can cause of tenderness in this kneecap area. It usually subsides when you stop doing that activity. And a lot of people have trouble going up and down the stairs. And the pain is right in this area.
Now, arthritis tends to affect over time the cartilage. The cartilage is the big cushion in between these two bones. And the pain generally develops gradually over time. You may have morning stiffness that decreases. Sometimes with activity, it may over all cause weakness in your knees. Now, here is what I see a lot in the ER. Acute injuries like torn ligaments. We’ve all heard of torn ACL’s. I’m going to give everyone an inside look at the knee. These are actually the anterior cruciate ligament. You can see the first part of it here.
When you tear that ligament, usually you will feel something twisting on the impact. You will hear a popping sound and then you’ll have a lot of potential bruising and swelling of the knee, instability of the knee. The pain could be constant and unfortunately, if you have a full tear of one of those, the instability may require surgery.
