Dr. Mary Wasko: Well Elena, the answer to a question about genetics and arthritis is a complicated one because there are over a hundred different types of arthritis that have been identified. To make a general statement about arthritis and the genetic link would really be difficult to determine, would be difficult to say. There are two particular types of arthritis that tend to affect adults and can have a genetic component or rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. For those two particular types of arthritis, there is a genetic tendency or predisposition if you will to developing the arthritis. But the actual development of the disease also involves exposure to certain features or characteristics in the environment. So genetics alone will not determine whether or not you get the disease.
