The Connection Between Birth Control and Cancer

Misty Hello my name is Misty from Austin, Texas. I’ve heard great good things about birth control pills and cancer. Some say birth control help to prevent certain kinds of cancer. Other says it may cause cancer, which is it?

Ram Parvataneni, M.D.: That’s a good question Misty. For ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer which is cancer of the lining of the uterus. Studies have shown that these two cancers are in fact decreased by using birth control pills. Regarding a cervical cancer which is the cancer of the opening of the uterus we now know that most cases of cervical cancer are in fact not related to hormones but in fact related to a virus the Human Papillomavirus. Regarding breast cancer most studies have shown that use of birth control pills does not increase the rates of breast cancer.

Birth control pills are safe and whether you are on birth control pills or not you should have regular pap smears and regular breast exams. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer you should definitely speak to your physician.
