It is growing a plant that is around a lot, and is probably tempting to nib along or make a tea out of because it looks pretty innocuous, and I think this is a member of the Buttercup family. OK, the Ranunculaceae family. And even though it has a pretty name like buttercup, I don’t know anything edible in that family. And there’s a spectrum, when I think of families I think of spectrum between food, medicine, poison. And so where on that spectrum does the family sit? So this one sits on the medicine-poison section. There is hardly any food in this family. And when I get calls of people being poisoned, this is the most common. Not only this family, but this particular plant, the Ranunculus, the Buttercup.
And there’s many different kinds of Buttercups, and which is kind of deceiving. Some look a lot like violets. It is what tricks people. And if you did were to eat this in any kind of quantity, it will probably burn in your mouth some and give you sort of acidic nauseousness in your stomach, and then diarrhea, and then you’d be fine. So be careful of the Buttercup family for any usage. And if you are noting it for medicine, it has some powerful medicines, like black cohosh and goldenseal, and things like that, are in that family. But it’s a family to be approached with caution and it’s ubiquitous. It’s around a lot and under foot, it is often around, so be cautious with the Buttercup Family.
