James Wilson: Hi! This is James Wilson with Elite training solutions. Today, I want to talk to you about some of the potential dangers that come with excessive consumption of a refined soy products and I'll explain what that mean. Basically, soy, I'm sure most of you're familiar with soy, soy products like soy milk, soy burger, soy dogs, you know meat replacements and stuff like that are pretty popular today, a lot of people who are trying to improve their nutrient or leaning more towards soy based replacement products for milk and meats and stuff because of the reported health benefits and the lower fat and stuff like that.
Basically, a lot of people just come to conclude that they're eating soy replacements, they're eating on regular basis is a healthy thing to do and that may not necessarily be the case. There could be some potential negative side effects from consuming a lot of the refined soy products that we use in the United States today. So, the first quick history lesson because a lot of people look at Asian cultures and their usage of soy through that history and in point of that as one of the justifications for the usage of soy in our diets today.
And there is some truth to that, but that's not a direct parallel, they're not the exact same. For example, Asian cultures use fermented soy, and then making a meso and tempeh and tofu. And those are the products that they would consume. So, it's not the refine soy products that you find in like a soy dog or something like that. Another thing to consider is total consumption. In most Asian cultures, they're consuming between 40 to 90 grams of total soy a day. And this equates for about 10 to 20 grams of soy protein.
Now, you look at a glass of soy milk and it contains seven grams of soy protein, which is almost half of this consumption in most Asian culture. So, if you're replacing milk, so you're having, you know one or two glasses of soy milk adding your cream refer your coffee as a soy based product, you're having a couple of soy products to replace me, you know a soy burger or soy dog something like that. You can quickly get up into the 50, 60 gram range per day, which is well above the average consumption in most Asian cultures.
So, again, it's not a direct parallel what they, what the Asians have traditionally eating is a different product and in lower amounts than what most people are consuming today, when they're using soy as part of their diet. So, again difference between the refine soy products and the ferments and soy products that you find in miso, tempeh, and tofu and difference in consumption. So, you may be wondering, so what is you know are they really some concerned about eating a lot of refined soy products and the answer is yes, there are some nutrients in soy, specifically Phytoestrogens, which are things in the soy plant and that mimic estrogen in your body, it can actually trick your body into thinking that is producing more estrogen that it really has, which will definitely interfere with your hormonal balance both male and female.
And a lot of those phytoestrogens that also contain some things that are noticed anti-nutrient is that actually interfere the absorption of certain minerals. So again, you know it's not that there is anything wrong with soy protein itself like a lot of things is just the over consumption of refined soy products that cause the potential problem.
So you know it's a good rule thumb, one or two servings of soya day from products that are made from whole organic soybeans is the best way to go, you know and just like with any other dietary advice that I give you. And you want to get away from you know excess one direction or another, you always want a well balance diet with a wide variety of foods in order to get the best health benefits from your diet. So, leaning two heavily on soy products and you know meat and milk replacement soy product, it can you know potentially have a judgemental affect on your health. And so again, you know it balances the key word. So once again, this is been James Wilson with Elite training solutions. I hope you've enjoyed this and I'll see you next time.
