The Dangers of Wearing High Heel
Dr. Travis Stork: 75% of you say that high heels causes you foot pain but you you’re theory -- no pain no gain.
Mecca: No pain, no gain. I will always use high heels. That’s it.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Oh, we love our shoes. That they give us that self-confidence you know.
Dr. Travis Stork: Yeah. I got to call you want it too because you have a theory a little bit of no pain, no gain. But 26 bones in your foot, okay, 33 joints, 100 muscles, tendons, ligaments, a lot of the important precious cargo down there that we have to keep safe. And you know, at least acknowledge with me that walking in high heels puts a pressure on a lot of wrong spots. And we’re going to show that a little bit because we have a high-tech motion capture system by natural point. And using it, Mecca will see how those high heels that you are addicted too as well will cause problems. So, you want try this? So, first things first, I want you walk barefoot and let’s try this technology with normal gait. Okay?
Mecca: Okay.
Dr. Travis Stork: And as Mecca is walking barefoot, we’re going to see her spine alignment. So, Mecca walk forward for us and that’s good spinal alignment. Alright, so Mecca let’s try it with your stilettos on now.
Mecca: Okay.
Dr. Travis Stork: How high are those Mecca?
Mecca: I think these are about four and a half that maybe pushing close to five.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: And how tall are you?
Mecca: I’m 5’5’’.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: She is actually taller than me.
Dr. Travis Stork: Well, now she is 5’9’’ and a half, so we’re going to look at you live, walking now with the stilettos because we remind everyone with the flat normal walking, your archer back was okay. So, go ahead and walk forward and we’re going to watch your spinal alignment. And the problem with the high heels is what it does is it tilts your hips forward. So, it is not your normal healthy alignment.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: It is not your normal healthy alignment but it’s that curve that’s what she wants.
Dr. Travis Stork: And if you look at a split screen here if you are walking barefoot versus your high heels, you can truly see that pelvis is tilted forward.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: And that curve that gives you, you know -- exactly. You see there? We know what we are talking about. But it does and we will give this to Travis. It does if you have higher than three inch heels which you do have on. It gives you seven times more pressure on your feet which disrupts your center of gravity. So, we do know it has some health things even though it makes us feel good.
Dr. Travis Stork: And here is the biggest issue. Yes, women may like the way it looks, the way it feels but--
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Not only women.
Dr. Travis Stork: Well, but in the end, it’s putting extra pressure in the wrong places, foot calluses, cramps, potential injuries and potential low back pain.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yes, all that. We know all that and you’re going to learn all that. But we’re not giving up our heels.
Dr. Travis Stork: Alright, I understand that but maybe there’s moderation.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: But there are things that you can do. You can sometimes wear heels that are about two inches or less because -- we will try it or wear real high less frequently like I wear. You know, I wear booties in between the show. Do stretch. You can do feet stretches in between. And then there is these beautiful little things called pedals and you can put them on your shoes that give you a little bit more cushion.
Mecca: Okay.
Dr. Travis Stork: So, we actually know all of you love high heels out there. Everyone in the audience is going home with the foot pedals kit.
