This was the last home of the woman Time Magazine called “The most delectable sex symbol of the century.” 12305 Fifth Helena drive, Brentwood is a surprisingly modest abode for the woman whose remains one of the most recognizable on the planet. It was here at Marilyn Monroe, aged only 36 was found dead on the morning of the 5th of August, 1962.
While it would probably never now be known whether Marilyn’s death was suicide, murder or a simply a tragic accident, what can be said categorically is that there will never be another star like her. At the height of her fame, Marilyn seemed to have the entire world in her thrall with spell-binding performances and films like “Some like it hot” “Bus stop” and The Seven-year Rich”, she also hit the headlines by performing 10 shows in four days for American troops in Korea in February 1954.
Professional this was triumph for her but it has a personal cost. When asked to perform, she was actually on a Japanese honeymoon with her second husband, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio who she had married the month before. DiMaggio wasn’t pleased with the diversion and other cracks in their marriage led to a divorce, just 274 days after they wed. Her third marriage with the great player Arthur Miller was also doomed, surviving only four and a half years. To this day, a myriad of rumors and conspiracy theories surround not only the method of Marilyn’s demise but just what extent her allege lovers President Kennedy and his brother Robert were involved.
With eyewitness reports that Bobby visited her house on the night she died. Her funeral was with the Westwood Memorial Park Chapel in Hollywood with only 30 people attending. The eulogy was delivered by her trusted acting coach Lee Strasberg delivered the eulogy and the end of the service was marked by Judy Garland’s recording of “Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz”.
Whether it was simply her early death but where the Marilyn’s star really did shine by than most any other she was fated not to be forgotten not by the public or by her neares6 to dearest. Despite their split, Joe DiMaggio remained very close to her. For 20 years after her death, he had a dozen red roses send to her crypt three times a week. He died in March 1999 having never remarried.
