The Difference between Joomla and WordPress
Carrie Webb: I have a question here from Alexandra. Alexandra says, “Hi, Robbie.”
Robbie Ferguson: Hi, Alexandra.
Carrie Webb: You talked a lot about Joomla and I'm wondering what the difference is between Joomla and WordPress. When you talked Joomla it sounds like you can create pretty compact site with it. Can you do that with WordPress or WordPress is just for blogging?
Robbie Ferguson: WordPress is a blogging software. It’s a PHP server site software that you install on your web server or you can their hosted service that allows you to blog. Joomla on the other hand is what we call a content management system so it’s much more capable of doing bigger stuff like not just blogging but also like for a full Flash website whereas WordPress is just pretty much for a website that is centered around blogging.
So you can do other things with WordPress but it’s pretty much if your website is for blogging WordPress could be appropriate for you. If your website is something safe like Category5.TV where we’ve got a blog but it’s not the centerpiece of the site. We want to be able to do much more like bigger and more flashy stuff then that’s where we get into content management system which allows us to really control the layout of the site.
They really and then be able to place things all over. It’s hard for me to explain that but I hope that makes a little bit sense. Does that make any sense? Two different software packages, you could almost think of WordPress being like kind of strip out if you will. It doesn’t have the same features as Joomla. Joomla has got tons and tons of room to operate and change your website where WordPress is centered around blogging.
Carrie Webb: Alright, I guess I’ll be learning more about that as you help me learn how to blog.
