In April 1982 Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands, the islands known in Argentina has been known as the Molina’s her self governing overseas territory of the UK but have been the subject to the Maritime faint of severity ever since the British invaded them 1833.
By 1982 the oppressive ruling military junta in Argentina headed by General Leopoldo Galtieri the struggling of an extremely poor economic performance and growing civil on rest. In order to divert national attention and playoff long standing themes of ownership of islands Argentina occupied the Falkland’s the UK under the direction of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher which highlighted all out war was never formally declared by either side.
On the 8th of June RFA Sir Galahad was at anchor in the Harbor at Port Pleasant as put off to known as Bluff Cove, 370 meters away was another landing ship the RFA Sir Tristram. A week earlier 5,000 further British troupes have arrived at the islands meaning that the new British Division Commander Major General Jeremy Moore now had the number of orchestrating offensive against Stanley the capital and only real town in the Falkland Island.
On the Sir Galahad with the first Welsh Guards who have been send to support this offensive in advance along with seven approaches. However, serious of change motive decisions, confusion of the placements and disagreements over how the ships would have to be motive led to the two ships occupying the harbor and was fully latent and without escorts or air defense.
Argentine Skyhawks fighters attack the Sir Galahad in search history which bought caught fire, they were very badly damaged in the attack and 48 men were killed, 32 of them Welsh Guards in the Sir Galahad. The Sir Tristram lost two crewmen although the large bombing smash to the decks failed to detonate immediate facilitating the evacuation of the surviving crew. Many soldiers were wounded over 150 suffering burns and other injuries.
The Sir Galahad had already been hit by a 1,000 pound bombing made which fortunately blew on board to detonate and it has also been straight in the narrow attack. But the bombs that hit the Bluff Cove was fatal. After the war the hawk was towed out the sealing sunk becoming an official war grave and a protective place under the protection of other remains at.
The Sir Tristram was abandoned but re-floated after the war and tow to Stanley before returning to the UK in 1984 in a heavy lift ship and being substantially reborn. After that ship selective service in the Gulf War and the boat companies of the 1990’s it also supported British operations this year and was part of the British fleets supporting the invasion of Iraq. The suggestion was finally be commissioned at the December 2005 but it's used for training exercises.
The Falklands war ended on the 14th of June 1982 with Argentine Commander General Menendez signing the surrender. The conflict result of the 258 British and 649 Argentine deaths and nearly 10,000 Argentine troupes were make prisons of war. today the islands remain under British control at even now Argentine that continues to stay as to Southern as it have them for nearly 200 years.
