Big Think is a global forum connecting people and ideas. It may be a cliché to say that knowledge is power, but that doesn’t make the statement any less true. We know that there are just 24 hours in a day, that you are bombarded with information, and that the bombardment will only escalate. We believe that not all information is equal. We believe that expertise is invaluable and should be shared. If you had a heart problem and could afford the counsel of the world’s leading cardiologists, you would seek their advice. If you owned a business and wanted to expand into China or Russia, you’d want to hear from people who had already done that. At Big Think, we put you in contact with the ideas of very smart people. We do not believe that experts have all the answers. On many subjects deep thinkers disagree. We do believe that we will all make better decisions in our personal and professional lives if our thinking is informed by expert opinion.

Science requires faith, as does religion. It is unable to answer questions about meaning and purpose because these are not questions that the lens of science is designed to look at. So the "faith" or "belief system" of science discounts these questions as meaningless and religion argues that they are essential. The scientific "lens" is not better, it's just different. The scientific method is an essential way of thinking that must be incorporated into any belief system that is based on logic; however, even logic tells us that logic is limited. A healthy belief system must accept this and realize that there is more to the universe than can be understood by any person or group in any number of lifetimes.
