From Montreal, gastric bypass surgery, a treatment for obesity that involves surgically reducing a patient's stomach size, may lower the risk of cancer. In a study of nearly 6,800 patients, the cancer rate among those that received gastric bypass surgery was 2% compared to 8.5% in those that did not receive the procedure. Those who had the surgery lost more than 67% of their excess body weight on average.
From Seattle, by drawing blood from patients, locating specific immune system cells, growing more of these cells in the lab, and then infusing about 5 billion of the cells back into the patient, scientists have been able to send an Oregon man's melanoma into remission without any side effects. The treatment has only been successful in one patient so far and more research is needed.
And finally, from Toronto, the provincial government of Ontario has become the third province in Canada to ban smoking in vehicles that are carrying children under the age of 16. Research suggests that second-hand smoke in motor vehicles can be 27 times more concentrated than in a house, and can increase the risk for conditions such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, respiratory infections, ear problems and severe asthma.
