I am Steve Terrano and welcome to this episode of body performance. Let us talk a little bit about Glycemic Index. What is a Glycemic Index? It is an index that shows how much your blood sugar is raised when you eat a particular food, it has to do with how much sugar is in the food and how quickly this absorbs into your blood stream. What is the big fear about the Glycemic Index of a particular food? Here is the fear, if you eat a high glycemic or a high sugar food, the fear is that when you eat that food it will raise your blood sugar level significantly, then your pancreas has to secrete a bunch of insulin to bring your blood sugar levels down.
The big worry is that your blood sugar levels will get significantly therefore causing you to become hungry and cost you to eat more carbohydrates. There are still problems with this theory number one, peoples blood sugar levels unless they are diabetic remain pretty much stable all day long and simple sugars do not raise your blood sugar levels anymore that complex carbohydrates. And there is also additional studies showing that a low blood sugar level is not necessarily tied to hunger, so what this mean? It means do not worry about the glycemic index, fruits are high in glycemic index but there is nobody in the entire planet ever got fat from eating fruits and vegetables.
So do not worry about the glycemic index, it do not work as far as controlling your weight. if you are diabetic sure you have to keep an eye on it but there is still some problems with it because not only what you eat but what you eat in the past has an effect on it. If you eat sugars with a lot of fat that is the levels absorption, if there is food in your stomach already that is least absorption, so there is a lot of things that affect us do not worry about the glycemic index, worry about the calories that go in and worry about the calories that you have spent. Talk to you later. Love your body.
