According to a study that followed over 26,000 male smokers for over 13 years, those who ingested the most magnesium had a 15% reduction in ischemic stroke. Previous studies have suggested that high levels of magnesium, calcium and potassium can lower blood pressure, while high levels of sodium can raise it. Foods high in magnesium include whole grain cereal, beans and nuts.
From Germany, data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program were analyzed and showed that 5 year survival from Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma rose from 50% in 1992 to 67% in 2004. Ten year survival also improved from 40% to 56%. Reductions in mortality may be related to the introduction of monoclonal antibodies and the reduction of HIV which has been linked to the development of non-Hodgkin's.
Finally, from Barbados, new evidence suggests that having glaucoma may raise the risk of cardiovascular mortality in those of African ancestry. In a study following over 4,000 patients for nearly a decade, those with glaucoma were 38% more likely to die from a cardiovascular cause. In addition, those treated with a beta-blocker to lower their pressure had nearly a twofold higher rate of death from a cardiovascular cause.
