Female Speaker: Dear Umbra, what diaper should we use that will be better for the environment, cloth or disposable?
Umbra Fisk: I know you parents worry, but honestly it's a wash. It turns out disposable and reusable diapers are fairly equal planet wise, a surprise you say. Well, there are a few things you can do to make either kind of diapers softer on the earth's tooshie. Treat disposable diapers as you would any lingerie or paper product. Look for unbleached, organic, or recycled content. If you are washing your own cloth diapers, wash with cold water and less toxic detergent, and line dry instead of using the drier. Don't use vinyl diaper covers. Buy organic if you can afford it or just reuse cloth papers from a friend, and use fewer diapers.
All diapers being equal, we can stop worrying and instead spend our energy reducing our overall parenting carbon footprint. Maybe start with not feeding your new born a raw t-bone steak.
