Fred Sokolow Teaches Johnny Cash's Big River
[Demonstration]
Age 12, I remember Washington in person with my grandmother. Stanley Jordan was on and this incredible guitar player and he’s playing and tapping all over the America. I was just taken by it.
I think maybe I was probably 18. It’s around 18, I started getting in interested in the tapping technique and of course, various other styles too and really there are no music that I don’t like. I enjoy all kinds of music but that particular way of playing really had an impact.

My set up as far as the guitar goes is I don’t have my action super low, I mean it is low but it’s not so low that I couldn’t actually play with a group. I might play, do some blues, country, jazz or whatever and I’m still able to kind off do balance in various techniques, so I like to have the action set up or it’s kind of a compromise.
I want to have it low enough, so I can tap but obviously, I would like to also do things where I’m just playing with other people or maybe if I want to play slide, I have it set up to that degree and it’s off, it’s American standard. No bells or weasels, it’s just a stunt strap.
