The Healing Power of Honey
Dr. Lisa Masterson: It’s healing and it taste good too.
Dr. Travis Stork: You guys are talking about eating honey.
Dr. Drew Ordon: Travis let me take care of the segment. I’m just enjoying my honey.
Dr. Travis Stork: You know honey -- it’s interesting because honey is actually in moderation not bad for us. It’s antioxidants, it’s cough suppressant, I put it in my coffee every morning.
Dr. Jim Sears: It’s twice as sweet as sugars so you can use half as much.
Dr. Travis Stork: So you know the Egyptians maybe they got it right.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yeah.
Dr. Drew Ordon: And we know that it keeps something when they found it in the Egyptian tombs and all that and they use them medicinally and it’s having a little bit of a rebirth.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Yeah.
Dr. Drew Ordon: Now the caveat -- I wouldn’t try this on severe burns or diabetic ulcers or bed sores, things like that but for minor abrasions, minor burns, minor cuts, there maybe something to this for a couple of reasons that it’s acidic, so it’s naturally going to kill bacteria. It actually creates a moist environment so that healing will take place quicker and in the form of these occlusive dressings it’s actually been shown that you may have better healing, better scarring with these products.
Dr. Travis Stork: So, it has antibacterial properties. You know sometime I’ve had a patients who had tried this and said that it’s been extremely beneficial for there ulcers.
Dr. Drew Ordon: There are some -- the toughest wounds are diabetic ulcers and you know for some of them maybe give it a shot if other things have not worked. You heard some testimonials there that’s worth a shot.
Dr. Jim Sears: So do you need to use the special honey from New Zealand or --
Dr. Lisa Masterson: Or you can use the honey --
Dr. Travis Stork: The special honey from New Zealand has the most antibacterial properties and is the most beneficial which is why it’s packaged that way.
Dr. Drew Ordon: This is all mine.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: It’s not Drew.
Dr. Travis Stork: But certainly worth trying. We’ve actually done a home health remedy where honey mixed with olive oil could help some skin irritation.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: And as you saw on the tape it even can help sometimes with methicillin-resistant staph aureus.
Dr. Travis Stork: You know what it does do for me. It makes my coffee tastes better in the morning.
Dr. Lisa Masterson: And tea.
Dr. Drew Ordon: It smells good.
